The History of Long Island Told Through Historic Photographs

The largest island in the continental United States, Long Island comprises Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. With a rich history that has included American Indian tribes such as the Massapequa, Shinnecock, and Quogue, among others; colonists from England and the Netherlands; and immigrants who arrived by way of Ellis Island, Long Island thrives today on its wealth of industry, agriculture, natural beauty, and the contributions of its nearly eight million residents.

Those very attributes are showcased in this volume, Historic Photos of Long Island. From the lighthouse at Montauk, to the growth of the Long Island Rail Road, to the factories of Long Island City, the breadth, contrasts, and vitality of the Island through a century of its life shine forth in the black-and-white images collected here. Windmills and tide mills, potatoes and oysters, aviators and fishermen–all are a part of the Island's history, and all are represented vividly among the nearly 200 images seen in Historic Photos of Long Island.

Hidden Treasure or Clever Fake?

Could that baseball card collection gathering dust in the attic be the next hidden treasure to make the news? Is the painting on the living room wall the long-lost work of a master? Joe Nickell, an expert investigator and historical document consultant, provides readers with the tools to determine whether they possess the next amazing discovery.

In Real or Fake: Studies in Authentication, Nickell draws on his years of experience to provide a guide for readers interested in distinguishing historical pieces from forgeries or reproductions. He details the methods used to authenticate or dismiss docum

ents, photographs, artwork, and other artifacts. Nickell first elaborates on the basic tests and techniques used in researching any item of potential historical significance. He describes the importance of investigating the historical record - or provenance - of any object, of examining the content of the piece to see if it matches known conventions of the era or author's style, of studying the item's material compositions, and of applying a variety of scientific analyses from the basic use of a microscope to highly sophisticated radiocarbon dating.

In each section, Nickell shares his personal experiences with various items he has investigated over the years, giving the story behind the item, detailing his examination, and arriving at a conclusion as to the object's authenticity. These cases include studies of famous items such as the diary of Jack the Ripper, Jefferson Davis' musket, and the possible second photograph of Emily Dickenson.

Nickell also discusses the specific categories of objects, with sections on documents, photographs, and other miscellaneous artifacts such as coins. In each section, Nickell presents an introductory essay on methods of identifying that specific type of object with examples from real investigations. In the introduction to the documents section, he discusses writing implements and types of ink among other areas of inquiry. He also lists some basic warning signs of a forgery such as incorrect writing characteristics and grammar, spelling, or word usage which do not match the supposed author or era. In his discussion of photographs, Nickell shares his knowledge of the various types of photography and when they were in use before looking at the ways of identifying the person in the photographa common quest when examining historical photography. The final section demonstrates the use of some of the more sophisticated scientific tests, such as infrared photography, electron beam analysis, and radiocarbon dating.
